World Suicide Prevention Day
The Canberra community will walk united on 10 September to remember those who have lost their lives to suicide, and to openly discuss suicide prevention in a supportive environment.
September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day.
Inviting the Canberra community to walk out of the shadows and into the light.
“In Canberra, we lose one person to suicide every week. Our ‘Out of the Shadows’ walk will see us gather together on the steps of the Australian War Memorial to hear a tribute to the friends, family and other community members we have lost to suicide,” Carrie said.
“We will then walk together down Anzac Parade and back.”
“By speaking openly about suicide, our community can join in the conversation around reducing suicide in Australia and removing social stigmas.”
“As community members, we all have an important role to play in suicide prevention. We invite the Canberra community to join us on Tuesday as we walk out of the shadows and into the light.”
Out of the Shadows is a free community event held on Tuesday, 10 September from 5.40am. Poppy’s Australian War Memorial cafe will be open for breakfast after the walk.
As a mark of respect to those who have passed, attendees at the walk will be offered the opportunity to list the names and ages of loved ones lost. These individuals will be remembered and acknowledged at the beginning of the walk.
If you would like to add a name to the memorial list to be read out on the morning, please email the events team. Alternatively, please see a Lifeline Canberra team member on the morning.
